Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

ACMADT403 - Train dogs using operant and classical conditioning techniques

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Interpret dog behaviour and identify optimal conditions for dog training

  1. Identify key aspects of dogs' behaviour by observing their posture, facial expression, body language, stress signals and energy levels
  2. Interpret signs that indicate fear, anxiety and arousal levels
  3. Identify optimal conditions for dog behavioural training
  4. Consider dog training activities suitable to the age of the dog
  5. Identify suitable training activities that entail both dog training and training the dog and handler team
  6. Select, check and ensure the handler uses appropriate equipment for the dog and themselves
  7. Identify and follow appropriate biosecurity requirements, legislation, regulations, workplace health and safety and animal welfare codes of practice
  8. Identify suitable dog behaviour training techniques, focusing on positive rewards-based reinforcement that is force-free and fear-free, while incorporating negative punishment and the underpinning theoretical principles of dog training

Implement dog training using operant and classical conditioning techniques

  1. Train dogs using voice and/or hand signals for tasks using operant and classical conditioning techniques and according to animal welfare codes of practice
  2. Instruct handlers to use operant and classical conditioning techniques to train their dog using suitable methodologies and practices
  3. Introduce dogs to a public access environment in a confined area
  4. Train dogs with their handler to handle distractions in more open areas
  5. Train dogs with their handler on basic to specialist skills
  6. Observe dog and handler practices to assess team performance and suggest appropriate behavioural modifications if required
  7. Assess dogs' behaviour in public access situations
  8. Maintain records of training processes and dogs' progress
